JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Gold mining resumed at JSE- and NYSE-listed Sibanye Gold’s Beatrix operations as from the Monday evening shift, after the company and unions reached an agreement to ensure a safe working environment.

Operations at the Beatrix North and South shafts were halted on Friday after nine employees were injured in a conflict between members of rival unions, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union and the National Union of Mineworkers, on Thursday.

Sibanye would focus on completing an investigation into the cause of the violence and was planning on instituting disciplinary action against “the perpetrators of the violence”.

The unions, meanwhile, have agreed to cooperate with the investigation, ensure their members refrain from any acts of violence, ensure the peaceful reintegration of affected employees into their places of residence and participate in future initiatives aimed at ensuring the peaceful coexistence of multiple trade unions at Beatrix.

“I commend the unions’ leadership on the mature and cooperative approach that they adopted during a period of high emotion, making the safety and interests of their members their primary consideration.

“It is in the interests of all stakeholders that the mines are able to operate safely and in a sustainable manner and this is an encouraging example of how cooperation and understanding can result in a mutually beneficial outcome. This mature attitude bodes well for the future of mining in South Africa,” Sibanye CEO Neal Froneman said in a statement.

The two-day suspension of activities at the Beatrix North and South shafts resulted in lost revenue of about R23-million, as these sections produced about 804 oz/d of gold.
