Shaping SA’s energy transition and the future of leadership
Red Rocket’s women leaders are helping to shape South Africa’s energy transition and the future of leadership within the sector. Engineering News speaks with Magdalena Michalowska-Logan, Sustainability and HSEQ Director, about her work, the rapidly evolving renewable energy landscape and the opportunities it presents for women. Being a female executive in today’s renewable energy sector means having the opportunity to help shape both the energy transition and the future of leadership says Magdalena Michalowska-Logan.
“It’s about bringing diverse perspectives to complex challenges and demonstrating that leadership is defined by capability, integrity, and impact. The industry is stronger when it reflects the diversity of the communities it serves”.
She believes that her generation can create a more secure, sustainable, and inclusive energy future. “Renewable energy can drive economic growth, create jobs, attract investment, and improve energy resilience while supporting the country's climate commitments.”
When Michalowska-Logan joined the industry 15 years ago she was often the only woman at the table. Today she sees a myriad of opportunities for women looking to build careers in the sector. “Renewable energy offers opportunities across a wide range of disciplines, including engineering, environmental management, finance, sustainability, operations, technology, and leadership. It’s an industry built around innovation and problem-solving, which creates space for talented individuals to make meaningful contributions while building rewarding, long-term careers.”
In this fast-paced environment, she points to adaptability, resilience and curiosity as essential qualities. “Renewable energy is evolving rapidly, and leaders need to embrace change while maintaining a clear long-term vision. Equally important are integrity and the ability to build trust. Sustainable success depends on strong relationships with teams, communities, partners, and stakeholders.”
