Australian energy company Senex Energy has announced that first gas is set to flow from its A$1-billion Atlas natural gasfield expansion, following the official opening of its Surat Basin facility in Queensland on Sunday.

Shareholders of Senex Energy, including Posco International CEO Kyein Lee and Hancock Prospecting executive chairperson Gina Rinehart, were on hand to celebrate the milestone alongside representatives from all levels of government and the Wandoan community.

The company states that the opening of the Atlas expansion is a significant achievement, particularly as the Australian Energy Market Operator has predicted shortfalls in gas supply in the coming years. The project will play a crucial role in providing critical gas to the east coast market.

Senex CEO Darren Stevenson noted that the expansion of the Atlas and Roma North gas developments will deliver 60 PJ/y, fulfilling a promise made by the company.

"Senex’s founding CEO Ian Davies had the vision for this ambitious project and transforming Senex into a material east coast natural gas producer, and today I’m proud to be carrying that vision forward into reality,” Stevenson said.

“To date, we have drilled more than 160 wells, completed the construction of the 56 km Atlas to Reedy Creek pipeline, and finished the first stage of the processing facility, with gas flowing and commissioning under way.

“Consumers will see new critical supply delivered to the east coast market early in 2025,” he added.

“This is welcome news for households and manufacturers, with Senex Energy keeping its promise to supply more, reliable natural gas to power our economy and support energy security,” Stevenson concluded.
