PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining giant BHP Billiton has awarded a A$145-million contract to the joint venture between project houses Sedgman and Civmec Construction & Engineering at the Jimblebar iron-ore mine, in the Pilbara.

The engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contract covered the civil, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and commissioning work for the installation of a new primary crusher and additional conveyor capacity at Jimblebar.

The $3.2-billion mine was officially opened in April last year and was expected to deliver a phase one capacity of 35-million tonnes a year by the end of 2015.

Longer term, a low cost option to expand Jimblebar to 55-million tonnes a year and the broader debottlenecking of BHP’s supply chain was expected to underpin capital-efficient growth in its Western Australian iron-ore capacity to around 260-million tonnes to 270-million tonnes a year
