S Australia crowdsources critical mineral ideas

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The South Australian government has joined forced with open innovation platform Unearthed to launch a global online crowdsourcing challenge to foster the growth of a critical minerals sector in the region.

“The government of South Australia is investing in the future, helping to grow the state’s critical minerals processing and manufacturing capabilities,” said Department for Energy and Mining executive director for mineral resources Alex Blood.

“Thinking Critical South Australia is focused on attracting the best, most innovative proposals from individuals and businesses across the globe and supporting them to set up operations here in South Australia to contribute to this growth.”

Thinking Critical South Australia is offering five finalists attractive incentives as well as access to a significant financial price pools, with Unearthed Innovation Systems partner Lizzie Brookman noting that the five finalists would receive high value incentives including marketing and promotion, professional networking and busines development.

A total price pool of A$250 000 is on offer to help kickstart the business operations.

The two-round challenge, open to registered entrepreneurs or businesses which are non-government businesses or not-for-profit organsiations, will open on November 3.

South Australia is estimated to contain some 65% of Australia’s copper, graphite and zircon resources, as well as halloysite, cobalt, rare earths and magnesite. The state is also home to the world’s largest zircon mine, and Australia’s largest graphite deposit.
