SATC 2014 Boasts an Impressive Speaker Line-Up

Regarded as Southern Africa’s premier transport conference, the Southern African Transport Conference 2014 has confirmed its dynamic speaker-line-up and in true SATC style, it includes leading names in the industry who boast years of experience and rank highly in their fields.

SATC will actively explore the latest in transport from both a local and international perspective under the theme, “Leading Transport into the Future”. During the 4 day conference scheduled to take place at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria, transport experts from the private and public sectors will tackle critical transport issues on the African continent through a series of action-based networking events, plenary sessions, panel discussions and workshops.

Topics that will be discussed include Urban Transport: Policy and Planning,  Transport for Rural Development and Capacity Building, Public Transport: Planning and Regulation, Infrastructure, Transport Systems and Operations, Traffic Engineering, Freight and Logistics as well as a  BRT Workshop amongst other topics.

Minister Dipuo Peters, who was recently selected to take on another term as South Africa’s first female appointed Minister of Transport, will officially open the conference on July 7, 2014. Heading up this speaker line-up is Mr Lucky Montana, Group Chief Executive Officer of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa. Also on the line-up is Dr. Jorge A. Prozzi, Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Prozzi performs research on pavement materials; design and rehabilitation of pavements; pavement management systems; applications of probability and statistics to transportation engineering problems; and applied econometrics. He is the past Chair for the Transportation Research Board International Activities Committee and the Data Analysis Working Group Committee. He serves as an expert panel member for projects funded by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, and is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists, and the International Society for Asphalt Pavements. In addition, he has been a member of several Technical TRB committees such as Accelerated Pavement Testing, Flexible Pavement Design and Low Volume Roads.

Roger Gorham who will also be speaking at the conference is a transport economist and urban development specialist with the World Bank, with over 20 years of experience in urban transport, land-use, air quality, and climate change. His current portfolio centres on Africa, with work on urban transport projects in Lagos, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi. He also works extensively with the Africa Transport Policy Program, on urban transport and sustainability policy. He is leading efforts on behalf of the Bank and SSATP, in concert with the United Nations Environment Program and others, to support the establishment of an Africa Sustainable Transport Forum, whose inaugural meeting in October 2014 will be sponsored by the Kenyan government.
Prior to joining the World Bank, Mr. Gorham worked as a transport, climate change, and air quality specialist with the US Environmental Protection Agency, and has also been a consultant for a range of international and private sector organizations, including the International Energy Agency, the International Transport Forum, and the Inter-American Development Bank, among others. He is the author of a number of publications and reports, including Air Pollution from Ground Transportation (United Nations 2002) and Flexing the Link between Transport and Greenhouse Gas Emissions (International Energy Agency 2000).
