Energy and chemicals group Sasol has been granted a three-year exploration permit by the Petroleum Agency South Africa (Pasa) to explore the Durban and Zululand basins, off the shore of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province.

The permit was granted to Sasol Petro-leum International (SPI) and is the JSE-listed group’s first operated exploration licence in South Africa for more than a decade.

SPI MD Ebbie Haan indicated in a state-ment that the basins were of interest, owing to their position at the southern end of the Mozambique Channel, where significant discoveries had recently been made in the north, most notably in the Rovuma basin.

SPI has also made some gas discoveries of its own in Mozambique, where it has both operating assets and additional exploration properties. Sasol has con-ducted three separate seismic surveys in Mozambique and drilled three wells.

The group did not disclose the expected exploration budget, nor the details of the proposed campaign, saying only that it would ensure robust public consultation during the assessment phase.

The permit was granted following the issuance, in 2011, of a technical cooper-ation permit by Pasa, which enabled SPI to study the potential for hydrocarbons in an area covering 83 000 km2.

It also follows the submission of a work programme in September 2012 and the completion of a high-level environmental-impact assessment and environmental management plan in February.

Sasol has already completed 4 000 km of a two-dimensional seismic survey in terms of a programme covering an area of 5 950 km2. The remainder will be acquired in 2014, following which the results will be analysed and interpreted.
