PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed West African Resources has processed the first ore at its Sanbrado gold project, in Burkina Faso.

First gold pour from the project is expected within the next four weeks, the company said on Tuesday.

“This is a major milestone for West African Resources and a testament to the quality of our team and contractors. Commissioning activities will continue over the next four weeks with first gold pour on track for early in the second quarter,” said executive chairperson Richard Hyde.

Openpit mining activities are ramping up, and some 360 000 t of oxide ore has been stockpiled on the run-of-mine pad, at an average grade of 1.5 g/t gold.

Underground development is also continuing to progress on schedule, with first development ore on track, and first stoping ore forecast for the third quarter of 2020.

The $185-million Sanbrado project is currently expected to produce an average of 211 000 oz/y of gold over the first five years of operation, with production averaging 133 000 oz/y over the 11-year life-of-mine.
