SA steel output down in May, global production up 2.6%

South Africa’s steel production fell by 7.6% year-on-year in May, according to data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

The country’s steel production is estimated to have dropped to 570 000 t, from 617 000 t in May 2012. Steel output is down nearly 23% on the 739 000 t produced in May 2011.

Global crude steel output for May was 136-million tons, an increase of 2.6% on the same month last year, with China accounting for 67-million tons, or nearly 50% of global production.

China, India and Japan lifted their steel production, reporting year-on-year increases of 7.3%, 1.5% and 4.3% respectively. South Korea recorded a 7.1% decline to 5.5-million tons.
