S Australia govt invests in resource innovation
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The South Australian government would invest A$750 000 over the next three years to accelerate innovation in the resources sector.
Manufacturing and Innovation Minister Kyam Maher said this week that some A$250 000 would be spent each year to fund a cluster for the mining and energy sector, designed to connect machines, devices and people to streamline the flow of information and to allow real-time decision-making.
“This investment is critical to the competitive future of our mining and energy resources companies, and those companies that service the sector.”
Dubbed an ‘iInternet of things’, the cluster was expected to open new opportunities in the mining and energy sector, Maher said, allowing the local industry to be more productive and better able to maintain competitiveness in the highly volatile global markets.
“A cluster will be developed by the Australian Information Industry Association and will comprise technology firms, research organisations and supply chain operators in the mining and energy resources sector.”
Maher said that innovation was crucial to the future productivity and efficiency of Australia’s resources sector.
“Maximising the potential of the resources sector is one of the government’s number one economic objectives, and we’ve introduced a range of initiatives to support innovation in the sector.”
Some of these initiatives included the mining and petroleum services centre of excellence and the ICT roadmap for minerals and energy.
