When extracting and refining valuable geological materials from the earth, a variety of industrial combustion processes are required, says global instru- mentation solutions manufacturer E Instru-ments International.

Product manager Bill Freed explains that the combustion processes can emit highly toxic gases that are harmful to the environment and to human life.

“E Instrument’s portable emissions analysers can help ensure personal and environmental safety, while enhancing the performance of the mining operation,” he tells Mining Weekly.

Freed further explains that capturing accurate flue-gas measurements using gas analysers helps to increase combustion efficiency and safety, while also providing accurate measurements to quantify carbon emissions of combustion equipment, which include furnaces, engines and kilns.

Highlighting the company’s E4400 and E8500 gas analysers, he adds that, while the E4400 and E8500 have been available for market consumption for many years, the gas analysers still enjoy positive market support and performance.

“We pride ourselves on the fact that we provide various ranges of portable combustion gas and emissions analysers for African customers across several industries, including mining, oil and gas, power generation and tobacco,” he says.

Both the E4400, manufactured in Italy, and the E8500, manufactured in the US, are available for the South African market through the company’s Southern African distributors.

Both analysers quantify the emissions emitted from combustion equipment, providing measurements that can be used for regulatory compli-ance, safety and equipment evaluation purposes.

E4400
The E4400 is a hand-held industrial gas ana-lyser designed for emissions monitoring and maintenance and to tune the combustion processes for boilers, burners, gas and diesel engines, turbines, furnaces, kilns, ovens, dryers, heaters and laboratory analysis equipment.

The product features electrochemical gas sensors and can have up to four gas sensors including oxygen (O2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and CxHy hydrocarbons. The E4400 also includes the CO dilution auto-range feature that helps prevent over-saturation of the CO sensor, while providing CO measurements up to 50 000 parts per million (ppm).

The E4400 also has an option for low-level measurements of nitrogen oxide (NOx) with 0.1 ppm resolution and high accuracy. Further, its gas sensors are precalibrated and are easy to replace; it offers efficient excess air and CO2 calculations; it has a built-in impact nonthermal printer, a rechargeable lithium ion battery pack, metal hose connectors, an internal memory of up to 900 tests and a computer software package with universal serial bus (USB) and Bluetooth communications.

E8500
Meanwhile, the E8500 gas analyser uses electrochemical gas sensors to measure gases such as O2, CO, NO, NO2, NOx, SO2 and hydrogen sulphide (H2S), as well as nondispersive infrared (NDIR) gas sensors to measure CO2, high CO and CxHy hydrocarbons.

“The E8500 is the most powerful and advanced portable gas analyser on the market and is a complete, portable tool for the US Environmental Protection Agency compliance-level emissions monitoring,” explains Freed.

Its features include a built-in thermoelectric chiller with automatic condensate removal; a wireless remote Bluetooth printer; a two-channel thermometer, one for stack gas and the other for air temperature; software for real-time data logging, graphing and reporting with USB and Bluetooth communications; and an ability to measure stack gas velocity with a pitot tube.

About E Instruments International
E Instruments International, which is head- quartered in Pennsylvania, in the US, designs, manufactures and markets a range of instru-mentation solutions encompassing combustion gas analysers, emissions analysers, indoor air quality solutions and calibration equipment especially designed for the mining, power, pro-cess, industrial, institutional, food and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning markets.
