Sa Entrepreneur Launches Audio Screening Device To Tackle Hearing Problems In Schools
Company Announcement - Overall, it is estimated that in the countries below Sahara, more than 1.2-million children aged between five and 14 years suffer from moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears according to the South African Hearing Institute. General prevalence studies show higher rates of severe to profound hearing loss in this part of Africa than in other developing countries.
Now the vision of a South African entrepreneur in the field of health innovation is about to reduce the impact of hearing loss in school children in sub-Saharan Africa. CEO of eMoyo Dr Dirk Koekermoer, a leading developer of methods and equipment enabling cost-effective, efficient means of screening children and adults, will launch a campaign into schools and industry this year aimed at instant screening some 120 000 people. At the forefront of the campaign is Koekermoer’s cutting-edge diagnostic audiometer KUDUwave – the result of a lifetime’s study, research and development.
He says the portable equipment is designed to overcome environmental challenges, carries the European CE quality mark and conforms to SABS requirements for audiometers. “Our company eMoyo played a critical role in the South African National TB programme for the treatment of MDR-TB patients and we are now taking healthcare to children.
“The KUDUwave does not require a sound booth, is easily portable and reduces costs involved.
“One in every 12 children in the country, or three in every class of 36, has hearing problems. Government policy for testing calls for this to be done once every three years but this is nowhere near satisfactory. Ideally learners should be tested every year and we hope to lead the way in this initiative which will have a profound effect on education.
