Name and Location
Rukwa coal-to-power project, Tanzania.

Client
Edenville Energy.

Project Description
A scoping study completed on the Rukwa coal project has indicated an economically sound project with a relatively low capital expenditure (capex) cost and a 50-year life-of-mine. A small-scale mine and power plant (coal-to-power) scenario to provide electricity for local markets has been identified as having the best balance for shareholder return, deliverability and achievable capital requirements.

Value
The capex to deliver a combined mine and power plant is estimated at between $35-million and $50-million.

Duration

Latest Developments
Edenville Energy’s Tanzanian entity, Edenville International Tanzania, has been awarded an environmental-impact assessment (EIA) certificate approving the start of coal mining at the Namwele and Mkomolo coal deposits, near Lake Rukwa.

The EIA certificate will remain valid for the entire life cycle of the Rukwa coal-to-power project.

The issuance of the certificate follows extensive field studies and analyses in 2012 and 2013, as well as the completion of reviews and site visits by Tanzanian authorities.

Commenting on the announcement, Edenville CEO Rufus Short says the EIA is a critical milestone in the development of the Rukwa coal-to-power project.

Short adds that the next step towards mining will include the completion of a feasibility study and the subsequent conversion of current prospecting licences and primary mining licences into full mining licences.

Further environmental studies and approvals will be required as part of the development process for a power plant.

While the Rukwa project will remain the group’s focus, Short notes that the EIA approval also provides it with the option to proceed towards a standalone coal mine development.

“We will continue to assess this and other options to achieve the best outcomes for our shareholders and the people of Tanzania, and to ensure that the project is developed in the most appropriate and viable manner,” he asserts.
