PERTH (miningweekly.com) – A recent resource upgrade has doubled the direct shipping ore (DSO) potential of ASX-listed Western Desert Resources’ Area F, which forms part of its greater Roper Bar project, in the Northern Territory.

The company reported on Friday that the DSO mineral resource at Area F now stood at some 30.8-million tons, grading 59% iron. The total Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource for the project area was estimated at 239.6-million tons, at 42% iron.

“This is a major resource increase in both size and grade. These excellent results are now being used to create the final pit optiomisation prior to the start of mining in the third quarter 2013,” said Western Desert MD Norm Gardner.

During December last year, the Roper Bar iron-ore project was given environmental clearance by federal Environment Minister Tony Burke. The project has also been given the green light by the state Enviroment Minister.

The Roper Bar project would initially involve the construction of an openpit operation with 1.5-million tons a year of capacity, later increasing to three-million tons a year by the third year of operation.

The project was expected to export its first DSO product during 2013.
