PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Mining major Rio Tinto has continued its capital spend in the Pilbara, awarding Leighton a A$100-million contract for mine infrastructure.

Leighton subsidiary John Holland on Friday announced that the infrastructure project would start later this month, and would be completed by April next year. At its peak, the site works would employ about 200 staff.

Rio was currently expanding its Pilbara capacity from the current 290-million tonnes to 360-million tonnes a year, investing about A$880-million. The company was expending its West Angelas mine production from 29-million tonnes a year to 35-million tonnes a year, while production at its Western Turner Syncline mine would also increase, from 25-million tonnes a year to 30-million tonnes a year.
