Reed investigates declining Meekatharra production

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold junior Reed Resources on Thursday said that it was investigating production decline at its Bluebird operation, which formed part of the Meekatharra gold project, in Western Australia.

The miner noted that at the end of May, some 20 500 oz of gold had been mined from the Bluebird openpit, compared with the forecast 22 600 oz.

The company said that the variance in mined ounces was attributable to ounces previously mined from the legacy Bluebird North and Bluebird pits, and not recorded, nor apparent, from inspection, owing to back filling from historical mining.

To mitigate the short-term impacts on cash flow from the potential foregone ounces, the Bluebird pit has been redesigned into two concurrent stages, to access higher-grade ore earlier at the southern end of the pit.

This would have a short-term impact on the timing of ounce extraction, Reed said, adding that based on the remaining Bluebird reserves, which were estimated at 4 200 mined ounces, the openpit remained viable.

Meanwhile, he noted that the mine to mill ounces reconciliation at Meekatharra has declined materially from that achieved until June this year. Reed was actively assessing the reasons for this, and was reviewing geological and mining practices and processes in the hopes of addressing the issue.

The junior has also mobilised both internal and external geological and technical resources at Meekatharra to identify possible contributing factors that could explain the recent variance in reconciliation, and to implement any practicable changes necessary to resolve the issue.
