RARE SOUTH AFRICAN WORDS

12th April 2013

‘You’re fired’ are two of South Africa’s most rarely used words. But after prolonged wildcat strikes at the Post Office and at Shanduka Coal, decisions were reluctantly taken to utter them. The Post Office dismissed more than 500 employees and Shanduka 250. The Post Office suffered a revenue loss of R97-million and was forced to pay R6-million in overtime to reduce the mail backlog, and Shanduka’s two-day strike at its Graspan colliery, in Mpumalanga, was not only illegal but also somewhat violent. At the Post Office, volunteers had to be roped in to work around the clock, and at Shanduka new employees from surrounding communities were targeted.
