JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Production at Randgold Resources' Tongon mine, in Côte d'Ivoire, had returned to normal following a fire in the mill section of its plant three weeks ago, the company said on Monday.

Both mill circuits were expected to be fully operational within two weeks and, despite a series of setbacks, the mine produced 210 000 oz of gold last year.

The fire started on December 24 during a planned shutdown for repairs to the No 1 mill cyclone feed pipe and spread upwards into the No 1 and No 2 cyclone clusters.

No injuries were reported, but both cyclone clusters, flotation cells and blowers, along with associated infrastructure for both milling circuits, suffered damage.

Speaking to journalists in Abidjan on Monday, Randgold CE Mark Bristow said the mine had overcome several challenges since commissioning.

These included the development of the mine during political volatility in Côte d'Ivoire and frequent disruption of its power supply.

“Tongon represents the biggest single investment to date in this part of Côte d'Ivoire and, when we made that investment, we invested not only in a mine but in this country,” Bristow said.

The company was currently exploring its tenements elsewhere in the country and hoped, with the support of the government, to develop these into world-class mines.

Bristow said Randgold's policy of partnering with host countries and sharing the value it created equitably among its stakeholders was the key to its success in Africa.

“For this to work, however, it requires our partners to share our own long-term commitment to developing and operating sustainably profitable mines and to building substantial gold-mining industries in their countries. It is for this reason that we encourage governments to promulgate attractive mining codes for investors through competitive and stable tax regimes,” he said.
