PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner Ramelius Resources has been forced to stop production from its Mount Magnet gold project, after electrical problems were encountered over the weekend.

The miner said on Wednesday that the electric motor driving the ball mill at the processing plant was unable to restart on November 9, following a brief shutdown to repair a feed shute.

It was believed that the motor suffered an electrical failure.

Ramelius told shareholders that it was currently working to bypass the ball mill in the processing circuit, using the existing semi-autogenous grinding mill to grind ore. This would reduce capacity to around 850 000 t/y, which is only half the normal capacity.

The mill repair would take between six to eight weeks to complete.

In the meantime, higher-grade ore from the Saturn and western Queen South pits would be prioritised for processing. Ore processing was expected to start up later this week, once work on the bypass had been completed. Mining would also be slowed down over the coming weeks, to match mill capacity and to reduce costs.
