Raglan mine, Canada
Name of the Mine
Raglan mine.
Location
Nunavik, in Quebec, Canada.
Mine Owner/s
Glencore Canada Corporation, a subsidiary of Glencore.
Brief Description
Raglan mines one of the purest series of nickel deposits in the world.
Brief History
The Raglan mine was established in 1997.
Primary Metals/Minerals
Nickel.
Secondary Metals/Minerals
Copper, cobalt, platinum and palladium.
Geology/Mineralisation
Nickel/copper/cobalt and platinum group element mineralisation is located at or near the base of subvolcanic mafic-ultramafic intrusive complexes, referred to as the Raglan Formation.
Resources are generally determined at a 1.5% nickel cutoff and comprise disseminated, net-textured and massive pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite-rich sulphides contained within 110 individual sulphide lenses, extending from 900 m below the surface. The size of these high-grade sulphide lenses varies significantly, from 10 000 t to 6.1-million tonnes, averaging 200 000 t.
Reserves
Total proven and probable reserves as at December 31, 2021, were estimated at 9.32-million tonnes grading 2.66% nickel, 0.74% copper, 0.06% cobalt, platinum 0.79 g/t platinum and 1.91 g/t palladium.
Resources
Total measured and indicated resources as at December 31, 2021, were estimated at 24.1-million tonnes grading 3.09% nickel, 0.90% copper, 0.07% cobalt, 0.91 g/t platinum and 2.27 g/t palladium. Inferred resources were ten-million tonnes grading 3.3% nickel, 0.9% copper, 0.07 cobalt, 0.9 g/t platinum and 2.3 g/t palladium.
Mining Method
Underground.
Major Infrastructure/Equipment
Raglan comprises four active underground mines and a concentrator.
Since the mine is in a remote area and off-grid, with no access to public utilities and services, Glencore has built the infrastructure normally found in a small municipality to support the mining operations. This includes lodging, a water treatment plant, a power-generating station and an airport.
Roads, kept open all year, link the mining complex to the warehouses and seaport facilities at Deception Bay.
Prospects
Glencore is developing the Sivumut project (Phase II and III), which will enable the Raglan mine to continue operating to 2040 and beyond.
Phase II will expand the active Qakimajurk mine and the opening of a new underground mine, called Mining Project 14. The mines are expected to be in operation until 2035.
Phase III will comprise three new underground mines – Donaldson, Boundary Area and West Boundary Area.
