Workers in South Africa had lost more than R6.6-billion in wages during strikes in 2012, Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant said on Wednesday.

More than 24.5-million working hours were lost during 99 strikes – 54 protected and 45 unprotected – throughout the year, she said in a parliamentary response to a question posed by Congress of the People labour spokesperson Diratsagae Papi Kganare.

The Department of Labour, as part of its yearly statistical publication, the Annual Industrial Action Report, collected statistics on strikes, including the reasons for strikes, working hours lost, the number of protected and unprotected strikes undertaken and the amount of wages lost.

During the financial period – from the beginning of April 2012 to the end of March 2013 – Oliphant noted that 3 636 wages and conditions of employment disputes were logged at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Over 61%, or 2 218, were settled.

However, she added that, while the department was currently unable to note the number of strikes where the CCMA offered assistance in terms of Section 150 of the Labour Relations Act, the institution offered assistance with 236 disputes during the financial year.

“In 224 cases, the CCMA offers were accepted and the CCMA was able to successfully conciliate disputes in 132 cases,” she said.
