Allied Technology (Altech) Alcom Matomo has been tasked with connecting 316 Gauteng provincial government buildings, 45 identified Thusong Centres, 20 priority townships, nine identified economic development zones and six urban renewal nodes to the Internet.

The R1.2-billion, five-year project comprises building, operating and maintaining a provincewide 1 600 km high-speed fibre-optic broadband network.

The broadband network will provide network coverage to 95% of Gauteng’s population and deliver voice and data services for 130 000 Gauteng provincial government employees, explains Allied Electronic (Altron) Telecommunications, Multimedia and Information Technology group executive and Altech CEO Craig Venter.

After a five-year period, the network will be transferred to the provincial government.

Altech’s partner, Chinese global technology giant Huawei, will provide a large component of the network equipment.
