PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Queensland government has approved QCoal Group’s A$1.76-billion Byerwen coal project.

The approval was subject to 122 conditions, Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, Jeff Seeney said.

The conditions were imposed to protect groundwater resources, surface water quality and fauna, as well as to control air quality, dust and noise, Seeney said.

The proposed opencut coal mine would deliver some 10-million tonnes a year of hard coking coal, and would employ some 500 people at full operation. The mine was estimated to have a mine life of about 50 years.

The Queensland Coordinator General’s report would now be sent to the Commonwealth Environment Minister for a decision on the mine.

QCoal was hoping to have project approvals finalised by early 2015, allowing project construction to start. First coal was currently scheduled for 2016.
