Qld asks resources sector to identify targets for A$30m exploration spend
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Queensland government this week announced that it would spend some A$30-million on exploring for mineral resources, with the government urging the resources sector to identify priority targets.
Natural Resources Minister Andrew Cripps said that industry itself would determine where nearly a quarter of the exploration support package would be directed.
“This package is one of the largest single investments ever made by a state government into mineral and petroleum and gas exploration programmes,” he said.
“The geological mapping and survey work this money will fund now, underpins the mines and resource sector jobs of tomorrow.”
The Minister said the state government would be asking groups such as the Queensland Exploration Council to work with government body, the Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ), to set research priorities for almost A$7-million of the total A$30-million programme.
The funding initiative, in conjunction with recent releases of new exploration land and ongoing efforts to streamline the assessment process for projects, demonstrated the Newman government’s commitment to growing the resource pillar of the Queensland economy, the Minister said.
“Since our election, this government has demonstrated a real willingness to create a legislative and business environment that fosters resources sector growth.
“Exploration dollars spent now, will create the mines, jobs and economic growth of the future.”
The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) has endorsed the state government’s commitment to exploration, saying that it was “highly significant” that the government had elevated exploration’s importance in securing the future of the state.
“Its encouraging that, despite the budget constraints, the state government is investing in the long term by strengthening the foundation for discovery,” said QRC CEO Michael Roche.
