PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified junior PT Antam has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with PT Freeport Indonesia to investigate the feasibility of developing a new copper smelter in the region.

Freeport owns and operates the Grasberg gold and copper mine in Papua, Indonesia.

PT Antam said on Tuesday that the MoU would allow the two companies to explore the technical, economical and commercial feasibility of a new copper smelter.

PT Antam is involved in several commodities, including nickel, gold, coal and bauxite. The miner was currently commissioning its Tayan alumina plant, and continues to work on the expansion of its Pamalaa ferronickel project, as well as evaluating the feasibility of the Mempawah aluminium project.
