Protecting mining resources by applying stronger mine security measures through intelligence sharing
The 2nd Annual Mine Security Conference is a global platform to collaborate on the deteriorating security conditions around mining and infrastructure, hosted by Pinpoint Stewards on June 21 and 22 at the Indaba Hotel, in Johannesburg.
Through her research, conference organiser Ankia Roux said: “It has been reported that illegal mining has been taken up at the highest level of the country’s security structure, but it seems industry is not convinced, since little is being done to combat it.”
“The root of the deteriorating security conditions in mining comes back to corruption and the lack of political will by governments as well as the shortage of resources to effectively tackle the crisis. To stop criminality in mining, stronger enforcement and mine security measures are the only immediate and effective way to protect mineral resources. This conference was created for mining stakeholders to share security intelligence and address strategies to address the threats to the mining fraternity,” she continues.
The 2nd Annual Mine Security Conference covers topics such as communities and extortion, security risk in mining as a complex new chapter, the procurement mafia, effect of the international buyers-market on the proliferation of illegal mining in South Africa and efforts by the Hawks to mitigate the impact on the mining industry, responding to the growth of illegal and informal artisanal and small-scale mining across sub-Saharan Africa, effective mine asset protection and risk mitigation and an overview of the international picture on mining exploitation etc.
Speaker companies include: Sibayne-Stillwater, World Gold Council, Investigation Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) - North West, Anglo American Platinum Security, Mining Loss and Risk Mitigator, legal experts and Professor of Criminology from the University of Pretoria.
Presentations by industry leaders, open forum and panel discussions, as well as technology demonstrations will form part of the two day conference in Johannesburg.
