PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The 60-km Project Atlas natural gas pipeline has been completed, with first gas sales slated for the end of 2019.

Project Atlas is the first acreage in Australia designated to supply gas to the domestic market, and will supply major Queensland manufacturers, and includes a 40 TJ/d natural gas processing facility and a 60-km buried pipeline that would transport gas from ASX-listed Senex Energy’s Project Atlas to the Walumbilla Hub.

Infrastructure specialist Jemana owns and will operate the processing facility and the pipeline.

Queensland Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham on Thursday said that the completion of the pipeline was a major milestone in securing domestic gas supply and jobs for Queensland manufacturers.

“Manufacturers need gas as a feedstock and an energy source and the completion of this pipeline brings the Project Atlas gas one step closer to market. Senex’s Project Atlas is the first gas venture created by this government’s innovative domestic market policy and Queensland continues to set the pace on gas supply and policy.”

The Queensland Resources Council has also welcomed the completion of the pipeline, with CEO Ian Macfarlane congratulating industry for partnering together to deliver more gas to the east coast market and the government for helping to put downward pressure on energy prices.

"The government has been very proactive in its support of the gas industry but other states must back their own industry and explore for their own gas.

“Queensland manufactures such as O-I Australia, CSR and Orora can access this gas to power their businesses which can power further jobs. Already this pipeline project has created around 150 to 200 jobs."
