Industrial products and adhesives manufacturer Pratley has launched a new internationally certified corrosion-resistant flameproof compression cable gland that can be installed without special tools or requirements.

The new, fully IEC-certified corrosion- resistant Enviro Compression Gland is also able to withstand any environmental condition.

“The primary function of any cable gland is to anchor the cable securely to an electrical apparatus, and strict international testing standards specify pernicious performance requirements for the certification of such glands,” says Pratley CEO Kim Pratley.

However, given the demanding requirements, up to now, no ex d/e corrosion- resistant flameproof compression gland in the market has been certified without some attendant requirements or special conditions of use.

“This means that, for the most part, cable glands require special conditions of external clamping or special tools or proprietary spanners to remain compliant,” he says.

Tested extensively at Pratley’s in-house laboratory, the Enviro Compression Gland has become the first to be certified without special conditions of use of attachments to its installation, such as special spanners or external clamps.

“The cable gland can be used in almost any environment – from locations in underground fiery mines and ex d flameproof environments through to the coldest and hottest climates on the planet, the gland has been certified for temperatures from –20 ºC to 95 ºC,” Pratley adds.

It is also IP66/68-certified and seal-rated for a continuous depth of 350 m under water.

The gland is made from high-tensile brass components encapsulated in a tough engineering plastic, which means it will not crack when being tightened.

This, combined with Pratley’s Taper-Tech internal seal design, ensures safe installation in corrosive environments, without damaging the cable or compromising seal longevity, owing to cable cold-flow, the company says.

The cable gland is suitable for installation in equipment groups I, II and III, and zones 1, 2, 20, 21 and 22 hazardous locations.

It is also completely oil and grease resistant.
