PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal hopeful Prairie Mining has started a prefeasibility study (PFS) on its Lublin coal project, in Poland, following positive results from a scoping study.

“We are looking forward to rapidly progressing the PFS for the Lublin coal project and have assembled a strong team of study consultants with skills and expertise in deep underground coal mining that I am confident will deliver the first study of its type in accordance with international standards within the entire Lublin coal basin,” said Prairie CEO Ben Stoikovich.

The scoping study, released in April, revealed that the project could support production of up to 8.8-million tonnes a year of run-of-mine coal, to deliver 6.7-million tonnes a year of saleable coal, over a mine life of 22 years.

The PFS has been scheduled for completion in the first half of 2015.

Stoikovich said on Thursday that the company would also focus on upgrading the existing coal resource through targeted drilling, and would initiate discussions with European steel mills and coal power plants for possible offtake agreements.
