TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Prospective asteroid mining company Planetary Resources on Wednesday started a $1-million campaign to launch the world’s first crowdfunded space telescope to provide public access to space and to place advanced exploration technology in the hands of students, scientists and a new generation of citizen explorers.

The company’s technical team, which had worked on every recent US Mars lander and rover, would provide direct access to an Arkyd space telescope, making space widely available for “inspiration, exploration and research”.

“People of any age and background will be able to point the telescope outward to investigate our solar system, deep space, or join us in our study of near-earth asteroids,” Planetary Resources president and chief engineer Chris Lewicki told an audience in a live broadcast of a press conference at the Museum of Flight in Seattle.

Using the Kickstarter fundraising platform, Planetary Resources had set a campaign goal of $1-million to be used to launch the telescope, fund the creation of the public interface, cover the fulfilment costs for all the products and services listed in the public-pledge reward categories, and fund an educational curriculum for students everywhere.

The campaign will run for 33 days and end on June 30.

Eric Anderson and Dr Peter Diamandis started Planetary Resources, in 2009, to establish a new paradigm for resource utilisation with the aim of bringing the solar system within humanity’s economic sphere of influence.

The company will conduct low-cost robotic space exploration, starting with the Arkyd series of space missions that will identify the most commercially viable near-earth asteroids.
