TSX-listed OceanaGold is making progress with the permitting for its Haile underground mine development in South Carolina, US, the company says, reporting that the US Army Corp of Engineers has published the supplementary environmental impact statement (SEIS) for the mine.

The SEIS is now in a 30-day public comment period, after which there is a 15-day review period before the final record of decision (RoD) is scheduled to be issued.

OceanaGold does not believe that the comment and review period will result in a change to the SEIS and that permits will be issued shortly after the RoD is finalised.

“The publishing of the SEIS is an important step towards finalising this process and receiving the related operating permits that will allow commencement of the development of the underground mine, increase Haile’s gold production and help unlock the full value of Haile,” said president and CEO Gerard Bond.

The RoD and related permits are required for the underground mine and to expand the operating footprint to allow for additional potentially-acid-generating waste containment facilities, overburden facilities and an expanded tailings storage facility.

OceanaGold previously said that ongoing delay in the finalisation of the SEIS was impacting productivity at Haile, where mining rates were limited by additional material and water re-handling, reducing output, and increasing costs.

Upon receipt of the necessary permits, the company has plans to improve operational efficiency with fewer constraints and lower mining unit costs to be delivered progressively over a two-year period.
