PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Pacific American Coal has reported a maiden 257.5-million-tonne resource at its Elko project, in British Columbia.

The company on Monday said the coal quality at the Elko project ranged from containing hard coking coal specifications to semihard and metallurgical pulverised coal injection (PCI) coal.

Early modeling has indicated that the Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource would allow for an initial small-scale opencut mining operation that would allow for early cash flow that would facilitate the predevelopment of a larger-scale underground operation.

The underground operation would target the high-quality coking coal seams.

It was estimated that the opencut resources with a strip ratio of less than 5 m3 to 1 t of coal was equivalent to 13.5-million tonnes.

Pacific America said on Monday that the next phase of exploration at Elko would focus on enhancing the coal quality and geotechnical databases through a targeted drilling programme.

Planning would address the permitting requirements along with establishing a detailed budget to achieve the company’s objective.

Prior to starting the drilling programme, Pacific American would seek additional sources of funding to assist in delivering a comprehensive exploration drilling programme.
