Ownership structures can shape and create long-term value
Vuna Partners investment professional Siya Nhlumayo examines how ownership structures can shape an industrial business’s growth trajectory, from the transition away from founder dependence to the role of management, capital allocation and strategic shareholding. Camerawork: Shadwyn Dickinson. Editing: Nicholas Boyd & Shadwyn Dickinson. Journalist: Mariaan Webb.
Ownership structure can provide important clues about an industrial business’s history, development and readiness for its next phase of growth, says Vuna Partners investment professional Siya Nhlumayo.
In Episode 2, Part 1 of IN FOCUS: Built to Last – The Future of South Africa’s Industrial Businesses, he looks at the transition from founder-led to professionally managed businesses, arguing that founders need to step back from day-to-day operations as companies grow and build management teams capable of taking the business forward.
Shareholding can also be used strategically to align founders, management and employees with the long-term interests of a business, rather than simply meeting immediate capital or transformation requirements.
For investors, effective capital allocation is particularly important in capital-intensive industrial businesses. Nhlumayo also warns that complex ownership structures can make businesses harder to invest in and potentially erode value.
Watch Part 1 of Episode 2 for more on how ownership structure can influence the growth and value of an industrial business.
