PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Commissioning of the 380 MW power plant for the Oracle nickel project, within the Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park, in central Sulawesi, has started.

ASX-listed Nickel Industries said on Friday that while the project’s four rotary kiln electric furnace (RKEF) lines had been progressively commissioned over the last several months, limited power availability within the electricity grid had restricted production levels to around 80% of the nameplate capacity.

With the power plant now commissioned, production levels are expected to steadily increase to around 130% of the nameplate capacity of 36 000 t/y of contained nickel in nickel pig iron.

“We are pleased to announce the commissioning of the Oracle nickel project power plant, which follows the early commissioning of the four Oracle RKEF lines and should now allow these lines to materially increase their production levels to in excess of 130% of nameplate capacity,” said Nickel Industries MD Justin Werner.

“In addition, we expect a significant reduction in the electricity component of the Oracle operating cash costs, which allowed our Angel nickel project to deliver margins of $4 894/t versus $1 559/t from our older Ranger Nickel lines in the March quarter.”
