PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Nickel miner Mincor on Tuesday reported that optimisation work at its mines in Western Australia had delivered results during the three months to September, with cash costs down to A$4.39/lb, from A$4.94/lb reported in the previous quarter.

Nickel-in-ore production during the quarter reached 2 883 t, up 7.5% on the previous quarter.

The miner said that the strong operational performance was due to a major change in the roster structure, implemented in early July, at the Miitel and Mariners mines, as well as higher average nickel grades.

In addition, a new stoping system was also introduced at Miitel, which was performing well to date and provided numerous productivity and cost savings, Mincor said.

The new stoping system would be introduced at the Mariners mine during the December quarter.

Meanwhile, production at the McMahon mine decreased sharply during the quarer under review, owing to the completion of all long-hole stopes during August.

At Otter Juan, Mincor continued to produce small amounts of high-grade ore, and noted that despite the lower volumes, the high grades ensured that nickel-in-ore production was up 25% on the previous quarter.

Mincor was continuing with its steady and planned reduction in personnel at both mines, and both operations would likely be closed before the end of the calendar year.
