The School of Concrete Technology is offering ten online courses to assist those in the concrete industry, and concrete-related industries, in upgrading their skills.

The courses are offered on the school’s online platform and are supplemented with online lectures that are used to explain important concrete technology concepts and answer any questions that the students may have.

School of Concrete Technology senior lecturer John Roxburgh says the courses cater for all levels of competency in concrete technology, from an unskilled labourer on site to university graduates in science and engineering.

The online courses are flexible and advantageous for employers and employees, he adds.

“Companies can enrol a number of their employees and the courses can be run specifically for these groups. This allows for far less time spent away from site for the employees, as there is no travel time and no time spent in a lecture room.”

The duration of all the courses vary between one day and five days, but the online courses have been stretched over a few more days to allow for more flexibility, as those that have enrolled can do most of their studying after hours.

“The courses are also designed to enable a student to advance in a staged approach to higher levels of education and knowledge in concrete technology,” says Roxburgh.

Students who pass the online tests at the end of their online courses are awarded certificates.

The School of Concrete Technology certificates are well respected in the construction and concrete-related industries and can open up many career opportunities in the construction sector, he adds.

“South Africa has an acute shortage of skilled people in the concrete industry, and there are job opportunities in the construction and civil industries, along with other opportunities in ready-mixed concrete, laboratories, admixture sales, cement production, repairs and the floor-covering industries.”
