JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Gold industry wage negotiations between the Chamber of Mines (CoM) and trade unions Solidarity and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) continued on Monday, while the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Uasa had been issued with certificates of nonresolution.

The certificates issued by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration entitled the unions to embark on a legal strike, provided 48 hours notice was given.

However, neither Uasa nor NUM had issued a strike notice on Monday.

Uasa stated that it was undertaking a strike ballot and, should two-thirds of the union’s members vote in favour, it would issue a strike notice.

“We should have the votes, determining whether we will go on strike, collated by Friday,” Uasa spokesperson Franz Stehring told Mining Weekly Online.

Meanwhile, the NUM, which was seeking pay increases of up to 60%, on Saturday gave the gold mining companies a seven-day deadline to meet its demands or face strike action.

"You are given only seven days to respond positively to our demands, failing which we would be left with no option but to resort to lawful industrial actions," the NUM said in a memorandum presented to the CoM.

CoM chief negotiator Dr Elize Strydom accepted this memorandum and commented: “We have seen you, we have heard you. We will take your memorandum to our members”.

Gold employers last week tabled a revised offer of 6% for category 4 and 5 employees, as well as for rock-drill operators.

In addition, the offer with regard to the living-out, or accommodation, allowances would be increased in line with inflation. This offer would increase the basic wage for underground entry-level employees to R5 300 a month, with a living-out allowance of around R1 730 a month, which would make the guaranteed wage for entry-level employees R9 120 a month.
