JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Members of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) have rejected Monday’s revised wage offer by Northam Platinum, the union said on Wednesday.

The two parties met on Monday under the auspices of the Council for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration to resolve an ongoing wage dispute that had entered its eleventh week and cost the company over R500-million in lost revenue.

Northam improved its two-year offer by 0.5%, which would increase the total wage offer to 9.5% for core workers and 9% for noncore workers for category 2 to 8 employees.

Category 9 to 10 employees were offered an 8% increase for core employees, a 7.5% wage improvement for noncore employees and a 7% improvement on the living-out allowance.

The world’s fifth-largest platinum producer further proposed a 9% increase in the living-out allowance and a once-off payment of R3 000 for all category 2 to 8 employees.

The NUM said in a statement that, while its members had rejected the offer, the union had made an “alternative proposal”, which could not be divulged until it was presented to Northam management on Wednesday afternoon.

The union had previously sought an average increase of 16% in wages and a 69% increase in the living-out allowance.
