NUM marches to Northam, calls for company to negotiate
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has reiterated its rejection of Northam Platinum’s most recent percentage-based wage increase offer, marching to its Zondereinde mine and demanding that the JSE-listed platinum explorer negotiate further.
“We believe that a solution can be found in talking. The company cannot [bury] its head [in] the sand and hope that after sending SMSs to the employees the strike will be solved, as only negotiations can do that. We call upon the company to come and negotiate,” the union said in a memorandum submitted to mine management on Tuesday.
While the platinum miner last week tabled a two-year wage offer of 7.5% for noncore and 8.5% for core workers within categories 2 to 8, and a hike of 8% on the current R2 200 living-out allowance, NUM acting spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu reiterated on Tuesday that its members were opposed to a percentage-driven increase.
NUM remained steadfast on its demand for quantum hikes of R2 100 for core workers – increases equivalent to between 23% and 43% at the lowest level – and R2 000 for noncore employees – representing increases of between 22% and 42% at the lowest levels, but restated that it would be open to compromise.
“We further demand a living-out allowance of R3 781. If this demand cannot be met on a short-term basis, the company must consider how it can stagger [this increase] on a medium-term basis, but it cannot avoid the discussion with hope that it will go away,” Mammburu said.
Northam told Mining Weekly Online on Tuesday that it was considering its position and would issue a statement in due course.
