PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed NuCoal Resources said on Wednesday it would lodge its submission to New South Wales on why an exploration licence over its Doyles Creek project should not be cancelled next week, despite being refused an extension of time.

In late December, the New South Wales government refused NuCoal’s request for more time to respond to a notice as to why its licence and pending application should not be cancelled. The government also reiterated that any further matters the company wished to have considered had to be provided by January 15.

The company, which has lamented the “limited opportunity to be heard” in the matter, confirmed on Wednesday that it would comply with the deadline.

NuCoal is fighting to keep its coal licence after the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) identified “corrupt conduct” regarding the grant of an exploration licence for the Doyles Creek project and recommended that the licences be revoked.

The ICAC found that previous owners of the Doyles Creek project had a personal relationship with former New South Wales Mineral Resources Minister Ian Macdonald, which led to the grant of an exploration licence despite the decision being directly opposed by the Department of Primary Industries.

NuCoal acquired the Doyles Creek project in 2010.

The company said on Wednesday that it was currently preparing a submission to the New South Wales government.

The Doyles Creek tenement is estimated to contain about 512-million tons of resource, and has a provable ore reserve of 50.9-million tonnes across two target seams. The project comprises an underground mine and an associated training facility.
