PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Rare earths hopeful Northern Minerals has launched a prefeasibility study (PFS) for its Browns Range project, in northern Australia, following positive results from an internal scoping study.

The company said that the PFS, which was slated for completion by the first half of next year, would be based on the scoping study flow sheet, and would focus on exploring and developing opportunities highlighted by previous work.

Meanwhile, Northern Minerals had also appointed Tony Hadley to the position of process manager, as the company expanded its project development team in the hopes of moving the Browns Range project to production.

“One of the key drivers for success is to have the right people, and we have built a first rate team at Northern Minerals,” said MD George Bauk.

“When you combine this with a high quality project, and the fact that we have raised A$30-million in project funding this year, we have the key elements in place to make Browns Range a success.”

Enej Catovi was also appointed as senior process engineer while Bill Rayson was appointed as senior development geologist. Northern Minerals also appointed Saskia Robic as project administrator.

Bauk added that the additional appointments would also help Northern Minerals deliver the work programme required to meet its target of first production by 2016.

The Browns Range project has a maiden resource of some 1.44-million tonnes, grading 0.73% rare-earth oxide, for 10 500 t of rare-earth oxide at the Wolverine deposit. A resource update was planned, following a drill programme.
