JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Striking rock-drill operators (RDOs) at JSE-listed Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine have cost the platinum producer 9 200 oz of metal-in-concentrate production and about R105.4-million in revenue to date.

Currently, there was still no resolution to the labour dispute that has been costing the company between 900 oz and 1 000 oz of production a day since April 2, Northam said in a question and answer document released on its website on Friday.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed to Mining Weekly Online telephonically that production had not yet resumed by Friday afternoon.

About 580 RDOs have been going underground and reporting for duty “but they have not been drilling”, demanding a 38% increase to their monthly production bonuses, the company explained.

This was despite a Labour Court ruling on Thursday that the work stoppage at the mine was unprotected, ordering the workers to resume their normal duties.

The company, which employed 6 800 direct workers and 2 200 contractors, noted that no other workers were joining in the strike, but it appeared that a number of contractors who perform support services were being prevented from doing their jobs.

“Northam is not in a position to say when the issue will be resolved at this stage. The best outcome for all parties involved would require that all the affected employees return to work as soon as possible”.

Management continued to engage with the striking employees.
