Northam optimistic of wage settlement, NUM revises demands
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum group metals miner Northam was optimistic that an end to a six-week strike at its Zondereinde mine could be in sight, as the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) revised its wage demands.
The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration- (CCMA-) mediated talks between the miner and the union “had progressed significantly”, Northam spokesperson Memory Johnstone said.
This comes as the NUM lowered its demands for members from a R2 000 and R2 100 increase in basic wages for noncore and core employees respectively, to an increase of R1 800 and R1 900 respectively.
The union had, however, not changed its demands for an increase in living-out allowances to R3 718 a month, but the NUM had indicated its willingness to enter a two-year wage deal, as long as half of the yet-to-be-agreed wage hike occurred in the first year.
Johnstone added that, while no resolution had been reached, the parties were much closer to signing a wage deal than they had been at the start of the dispute.
The first CCMA-led talks failed in October, after which the union declared a strike on November 3.
However, while NUM chief negotiator Ecliff Tantsi said that heading back to the CCMA last Thursday was a positive step, he was disappointed that Northam had not budged with its final offer.
Northam had tabled a final offer of a two-year wage increase of 9% for core and 8% for noncore employees, as well as an 8% increase in the living-out allowance.
