PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Australian gold miner Norseman Gold has announced plans to terminate the employment of 33 employees at its subsidiary Central Norseman Gold Corporation, which operates the Norseman mine, in Western Australia.

The company said on Friday that the decision followed a comprehensive review of its operations.

During 2013, Norseman Gold undertook a complete evaluation of the business and a review of the last 20 years of the Norseman operation in terms of tonnage, grades, costs and production levels.

Staff levels were reduced by 70 during the year but the operation continued to incur losses, with the board considering its options to continue production at the operation.

Norseman said that Central Norseman Gold Corporation was currently evaluating its options in relation to completing the remnant mining programme.

The Norseman mine is Australia’s longest continuing running gold operation, which has produced over 5.5-million ounces of gold over more than 70 years.
