Occupational noise exposure remains one of the leading causes of preventable occupational hearing loss in mining and industry, the company states. While hearing protection has long been recognised as an essential part of personal protective equipment (PPE), modern HCPs require more than employees merely receiving hearing protection.

“Organisations need confidence that hearing protection is appropriate for the individual’s noise exposure, provides effective attenuation and is supported by ongoing verification and documented records.”

Noise-Ban adds that effective hearing conservation relies on the combined efforts of an organisation's HCP, supported by reliable solutions that can be verified, monitored and maintained over time.

Therefore, rather than replacing or managing an organisation’s HCP, Noise-Ban partners with occupational hygienists, occupational health practitioners, audiologists and safety professionals and strengthens the hearing protection component through the provision of specialised, verified products and ongoing support.

From Products to Partnership

The company explains that, for many organisations, hearing protection has traditionally been viewed as a procurement exercise: appropriate products are selected, distributed to employees and replaced when necessary.

“While supplying hearing protection remains an essential part of any [HCP], products alone cannot guarantee effective protection.”

This is owed to the fact that every workforce is different, with varying noise levels and environments and where different work-related activities necessitate protection that provides appropriate attenuation for employees’ specific exposure.

“The real question is no longer simply: ‘are employees wearing hearing protection?’ It has become: ‘Can we demonstrate that each employee is receiving the level of protection required for their specific noise exposure?’ This shift moves organisations beyond assumptions towards measurable evidence.”

Supporting HCPs

Noise-Ban says it focuses on five key areas to strengthen the hearing protection component of an existing HCP.

The first is custom-made hearing protection that provides the required level of attenuation while remaining practical for everyday use.

“Noise-Ban’s custom-made hearing protection is individually manufactured to provide consistent fit, long-term durability and reliable attenuation in demanding industrial environments. Because every protector is produced from an individual ear impression, it helps minimise fit variability commonly associated with generic hearing protection while supporting consistent protection throughout its service life.”

These products, when combined with the second key area – individual fit verification – help organisations gain confidence that employees are receiving appropriate hearing protection.

Further, the combination of the two aspects is critical as “selecting appropriate hearing protection does not automatically guarantee that the required attenuation has been achieved”.

Noise-Ban explains that individual fit verification combines seal testing with measurable attenuation to confirm that every employee receives the requisite level of protection.

“Rather than relying solely on laboratory performance ratings, fit verification provides objective evidence that hearing protection is delivering effective attenuation under real-world working conditions. This allows organisations to make informed decisions based on measurable results.”

The third area is yearly monitoring. Hearing protection should be reviewed throughout its service life to help maintain effective attenuation and to identify changes that may affect performance.

Yearly monitoring provides ongoing support by reassessing hearing protection, reviewing fit where required and helping organisations maintain consistent protection over time.

Fourth is HCP support. While every organisation remains responsible for its own HCP, Noise-Ban supports existing programmes by assisting with the implementation of hearing protection and providing user instruction, product follow-up and practical guidance relating to hearing protection best practice.

“Our role is to strengthen the hearing protection component of [the] programme while working alongside [. . .] Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Health teams. By working collaboratively with existing programme owners, organisations benefit from specialist [ . . .] support without disrupting established hearing conservation processes.”

Finally, Noise-Ban offers compliance support.

“Accurate records are an essential part of demonstrating the ongoing management of hearing protection within [an] HCP. Noise-Ban provides database records that capture individual hearing protection allocation, fit verification results and ongoing monitoring activities.”

Organisations therefore have access to structured information that supports reporting obligations, programme reviews and internal record management.

Confidence Through Partnership

Noise-Ban acknowledges that mining companies continue to invest significantly in improving workplace health and safety.

However, it has also observed that, as expectations around occupational hearing conservation evolve, organisations are increasingly looking beyond hearing protection products and seeking partners that can provide ongoing support and practical documentation.
