Hundreds of indigenous Brazilians converged on the nation’s capital to protest pending laws that allow mining, energy and agricultural investment in the areas where they live. Protesters who demonstrated against proposed new rules for indigenous lands demarcation blocked highways in cities across Brazil and set up camp in front of Congress in Brasilia to decry the alleged death of 54 indigenous Brazilians over mainly land disputes. More than 600 demarcation plans are pending.
