New Hope to scale back Jeebropilly operations
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Coal miner New Hope Corporation on Tuesday announced that it would scale back operations at its high-cost Jeebropilly mine, in Queensland, to limit costs.
Effective from late April, the miner scaled back operations from six days to five days, as it pursued cost-reduction initiatives across all its operating sites.
New Hope said that in conjunction with the cessation of mining operations at its New Oakleigh mine, in January this year, this cut-back in activity at Jeebropilly would result in yearly production of 700 000 t from the West Moreton, as opposed to the previous 1.1-million tons.
Production at the Acland operation remained unchanged at 4.8-million tons a year.
Meanwhile, in its quarterly report for the three months to April, New Hope noted that raw coal production for the period was down 20% on the previous corresponding period, while clean coal production was down 24%.
Raw coal production for the three months reached 2.4-million tons, while saleable coal production was 1.2-million tons.
The production decline was ascribed to further production shutdowns, which were implemented to manage high levels of coal stockpiles, which mounted following heavy rainfall and rail disruptions in January and February.
Meanwhile, sales for the quarter ended April were also impacted by the rail line disruption, but New Hope noted that shipping recovered quickly after railing from Acland was resumed in mid-February, improving coal sales to 1.5-million tons.
This was 2% below the previous corresponding period.
