New Government Action On Insecticides And Chemicals In Paint
This article has been supplied.
Company Announcement - Deryck Spence, executive director of SAPMA, says the coatings industry has been advised by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries , that any paint manufacturer producing paints which contain insecticides or chemicals, such as anti-mould agents, would in future have to have their paints registered. “SAPMA has therefore notified all members and started a survey of the uses of insecticides and chemicals in the coatings industry. The SAPMA Technical Committee - which has all the large paint producers in South Africa as members - is dealing with the matter as a matter of urgency and will present our findings, based on members’ input, to DAFF as soon as possible,” Spence stated.
He said in the past the onus had, in terms of legislation, rested on raw material suppliers to control insecticide and chemical levels in the products they supplied to coatings producers. “It would appear that the government now has a different interpretation on the Hazardous Substances Act of 1947 and is pursuing implementation among all players in the coatings sector with a high level of urgency. We understand that DAFF inspectors are active throughout the country and have already ordered that stock be placed under quarantine pending registration.” Spence added that SAPMA would fully co-operate with the new governmental initiative as the association has the prevention of hazardous materials reaching the consumer as one of its main objectives. “SAPMA has, for example, for long been lobbying the government to prosecute offenders responsible for the distribution of leaded paints in retail outlets,” he explained.
