At a time when sustainability is more important than ever, especially given the economic fallout from the current pandemic, a new book offers the construction industry valuable insights into the importance of galvanizing to ensure the viability of their projects.
The South African chapter of the International Zinc Association (IZA) has produced The Essentials of Galvanizing to share expert industry knowledge and global insight tailored to the South African reality. The book is a guide for consulting engineers, designers and architects to better understand the value of galvanizing in various aspects of their projects.
Once a mainstay of construction and design projects, increasingly the galvanizing of steel is being skimped on to save costs, but the long-term value galvanizing offers calls for this practice to be reconsidered. As South Africa seeks to redress the economic dislocation of 2020, the construction and civil engineering sectors in particular need to prioritise long-term performance over short-term profits.
Jointly compiled and prepared by Terry Smith and Simon Norton, the book outlines the importance of hot dip galvanizing for steel structures as one of the most cost-effective ways to prevent premature corrosion. While hot dip galvanising may cost more initially, it provides a long-term maintenance-free service life, saving significant sums of money normally spent on repainting or coating maintenance over the prescribed life of the project.
Across seven chapters the book addresses aspects of the process most relevant to professionals responsible for specifications on industrial construction projects. Starting with Specifications and Standards, the guide also offers important information on metallic zinc coatings and technicalities, alternative applications of metallic zinc coatings and hot dip galvanizing in mining applications, among other topics of importance to industry professionals.
The book is particularly useful for anybody in the construction or design industry seeking a quick guideline on when to galvanize, what to galvanize and the facts that help sell a team or client on the importance of galvanizing.
The launch of the book, which is available in both ebook and hard copy format, coincides with a webinar on the essentials of galvanizing, presented by Creamer Media’s Contract Publishing, which also publishes Engineering News & Mining Weekly, on Wednesday 15 July 2020. The free 90-minute webinar is aimed at design engineers, architects, specifiers at construction firms, consulting engineers, project engineers and structural engineers as the content will focus on zinc’s corrosion protection capability for the construction, mining and structural steel industries.
