PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Neometals and Mineral Resources have launched a definitive feasibility study (DFS) on their ELi process, which produces battery-grade lithium hydroxide directly from spodumene concentrates.

A 2012 prefeasibility study demonstrated the potential of the ELi process to deliver operating costs of $3 877/t and robust financial returns, with a net present value estimated at $321-million and an internal rate of return of 94%, based on 20 000 t/y lithium hydroxide production.

The DFS would incorporate the results of a semi-pilot-scale testwork programme conducted by a laboratory in the US, which exceeded expectations in the purification of lithium chloride solutions and current efficiency across the electrolysis membrane, exceeding the assumptions in the prefeasibility study.

The DFS was scheduled for completion in the June 2016 quarter.

Neometals and Mineral Resources are equity holders in the Mt Marion lithium project, in Western Australia, and are entitled to buy up to 51% of the lithium concentrates produced from Mt Marion after the third year of production.

The project would deliver about 200 000 t/y of chemical-grade spodumene concentrate, with first production expected in mid-2016.
